Azeem goes from As in the SPM to an ace on the track again

PETALING JAYA: Three days ago, young sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi (pic) scored 6As in his SPM exams.

Yesterday, the 18-year-old went to score an A in the Perak Open, winning the 100m with a new meet record of 10.28 seconds at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh. The previous record was 10.49, set by Jonathan Nyepa in 2019.

Representing Perak, Azeem upstaged the more experienced Khairul Hafiz Jantan, who finished second in 10.80. Third was Mohd Raimi Mustafa Kamal, who registered 10.87.

Azeem also bettered his personal best of10.37 in the Malaysian All-Comers Championship in March.

His 10.28 in Perak is also the national season’s best, which augurs well for Azeem, who is preparing for the World Junior Championships from Aug 1-6 in Cali, Colombia.

It’s also a sign that he has got over his SEA Games pain in Hanoi last month, where he was disqualified for a false start in the semi-finals of the 100m event.

He lost his cool and could not control his emotions over the incident.

Azeem eventually apologised for his foul mood on social media and promised to be wiser after the painful experience.

Meanwhile, another national athlete Azreen Nabila Alias, who competed in the Olympics last year, won the women’s 100m final in the Perak Open with a time of 12.11.

SEA Games bronze medallist Sadat Marzuqi Ajisan won the hammer throw gold with a throw of 60.53m, breaking his personal best of 59.94m, set last year.
