KUALA LUMPUR: Hammer thrower Jackie Wong Siew Cheer, the first national athlete to be tested positive for Covid-19, is on the mend and in high spirits.
The 27-year-old is still warded at the Sibu General Hospital since March 16 and confined to his room. He is not allowed visitors but he can move around in his room and spends much of the day watching television.
Jackie, who bagged silver in the Philippines SEA Games last December, when contacted by phone yesterday, said he was recovering well.
Thanks to his fitness as a national athlete, he was not too badly affected and did not need a ventilator or medication.
“I am not taking any medicine, only some supplements to boost my immune system, ” he said.
“There is nothing to fear as I feel okay.
“The doctors did another medical test on me yesterday (on Sunday) and I will know in the next few days about the results.
“I am optimistic that I will recover soon and be allowed to leave the hospital, ” said Jackie, who contracted the virus from his father (Wong Ling Biu) when he visited his parents in Sarikei, Sarawak on March 2.
His father has also been admitted in same hospital for more than a week and is also recovering.
Jackie said that although no one is allowed to visit him in the hospital, his coach Gu Yuan (from China) who has been training him for the last six years had called to check on his condition.
“I have told her I will be back in training soon and that I am recovering.
“I just want to advise all national athletes to stay home and take care of themselves and not to move around.
“I believe that the situation will improve quite soon, ” said Jackie, who has broken the national record 17 times.
His latest record of 68.22m was set at the Malaysian Closed Athletics Championships last year.
There was also good news for the 47 athletes and officials who were in close contact with Jackie. All have tested negative for Covid-19.
The athletes and officials have been under quarantine at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil since last week.
