Jannaton misses target but renews season best record

PETALING JAYA: Archer Nur Jannaton Abdul Jalil (pic) had a short-lived debut in Paris Paralympics when she lost 124-138 to India’s Sarita in the last 16 of the women’s individual compound at Les Invalides yesterday.

The 28-year-old however has obtained one consolation prize.

She would return with the satisfaction of renewing her season best record after finishing with 649 points to rank 24th in the qualification round a day earlier.

Jannaton has surpassed her previous record of 615 points which she had set at the World Championship in Dubai in March.

Former world champion S. Suresh has set up an interesting early round match-up against American Eric Bennett in the last 16 of the men’s competition.

Suresh defeated Bennett in the final when he won the world title back in Holland in 2019.

Suresh has been drawn to face the two-time world champion American on Sept 4 after finishing 12th in the qualification round with 625 points.

The 31-year-old can hold his head high as the qualification score was his new personal best.

He previously had posted 596 points during the World Ranking Event in the Czech Republic last June.

Bennett ended the qualification round in 21st place with 602 points while the home representative Guillaume Toucoullet dominated the ranking round with 652 points.
