MCA Youth urges the Madani government to abandon its policy of prolonged ambiguity and establish a clear, comprehensive, and decisive long-term framework to address the escalating refugee crisis, with a particular focus on the Rohingya community.
While MCA Youth fully acknowledges the complex humanitarian considerations involved in balancing national compassion with incoming migration flows, compassion cannot substitute for a coherent national policy. This issue has been allowed to drift for far too long without a definitive resolution, placing an unsustainable burden on our local communities and national security.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim informed the Dewan Rakyat last Tuesday that 1,476 Myanmar refugees were repatriated from Malaysia on September 29, and none of whom were of Rohingya ethnicity. The government has maintained that Rohingya refugees will only be returned with their explicit consent to protect their human rights. However, leaving the choice entirely in the hands of the refugees is fundamentally flawed. Relying on voluntary compliance without a structured enforcement or diplomatic roadmap is precisely why the Rohingya population in Malaysia continues to surge unchecked.
With approximately 224,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with the UNHCR in Malaysia, roughly 126,000 Rohingya refugees are residing informally within urban and rural communities without official legal recognition.
The government's continued hesitation to enforce strict, transparent measures regarding their legal status creates severe repercussions for everyday Malaysians. Unauthorised settlements, depressed wages in informal labour sectors, and rising public safety concerns directly impact the livelihoods and well-being of local citizens.
If the Rohingya community is exempted from repatriation under current terms, the Madani government owes the Malaysian public a direct answer: What is their official, binding status in this country?
MCA Youth demands that the Federal Government stop kicking the can down the road. We call upon the Home Ministry and the Federal Government to formulate a robust, transparent, and long-term action plan that safeguards national sovereignty, protects public security, and provides absolute clarity on the management of displaced populations once and for all.
