AI regulation is urgently needed right now

ON Aug 14, 2025, US lawmakers called for a formal probe into Meta (which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) after the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot described an eight-year-old boy’s body as “a work of art” and “a treasure I cherish deeply” during an online conversation.

What should have been a harmless interaction between a child and a piece of technology spiralled into something deeply disturbing, exposing the dark underside of unregulated generative AI.
