Chance to regulate gig economy fairly

DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi responded to questions earlier this year about the setting up of the Gig Economy Commission, saying it will be sped up once approval from the Cabinet is received (“DPM: We’ll look after gig workers”, The Star, Jan 22; online at bit.ly/star_gigecon).

Last year, Ahmad Zahid had proposed creating the Gig Economy Commission – tentatively called Suruhanjaya Ekonomi Gig Malaysia, or SEGiM – as the main regulatory body to ensure the sustainable growth of Malaysia’s gig economy ecosystem. This step is seen as crucial in addressing the dynamics of the gig industry, which increasingly dominates the Malaysian job market.
