I AM writing in response to the article “Patient abandonment on the rise”, which highlights the alarming increase in the abandonment of older adults in hospitals.

Is older adults abandonment an issue of neglect by family or caregivers, or are there more complex and critical factors at play? Imposing penalties on families for abandonment might seem like a solution, but have we thoroughly examined why abandonment happens?
