Strengthening national unity

SELANGOR Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s call to strengthen national unity through understanding and respecting the traditional cultures and vales of the various races is timely and warrants the serious attention of all Malaysians. (“There are no ‘pendatang’, Rulers accepted all” – Sunday Star, Dec 10).

The Sultan’s strong message in an interview with the Sunday Star on the eve of his 78th birthday is particularly directed at politicians who, the Ruler said, must understand the social contract, the give-and-take spirit of the leaders of the three major races when the nation attained Independence in 1957 with a non-theocratic system of democratic government.
