Aspects of sentencing guidelines

I REFER to the report “Growing ganja in room gets Penampang man life imprisonment” (The Star, July 24) on the sentencing of a 28-year-old man by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu for possessing and planting a cannabis tree.

He was punished under Section 6B(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a life imprisonment and whipping of not fewer than six strokes upon conviction.
