TRANSITIONING from one stage of life to the next can be quite challenging, more so for those entering semi- or full-time retirement.
The golden years should be a time for senior citizens to cherish the memories of the past while embracing new experiences. However, many may face loneliness, boredom, and a lack of purpose in life.
That’s where SeniorsAloud (SA) and other similar outfits come in. As a member of SA, I would like to describe its purpose and impact on the welfare of senior citizens.
SA was founded by Lily Fu, a passionate advocate for the well-being of seniors in Malaysia. It began on the Internet in May 2008 as a blog with postings of articles and videos that would appeal to adults aged 50 and above. It has evolved into a go-to site for seniors seeking information, inspiration or connection with other seniors.
Senior citizens the world over are bonded by a common goal – to live a long and happy life in good health and with financial security. SA is the perfect platform for seniors to connect with others, share their experiences, and find purpose and meaning in their lives.
SA organises a wide range of activities, including hiking, singing, cooking and dancing. It also offers opportunities for cultural enrichment, such as visits to heritage sites and art exhibitions. Those interested in culinary delights can go for food tours or take up cooking classes.
Whatever their interests, seniors are sure to find something that will pique their curiosity and bring joy to their lives.
Senior citizens’ groups such as SA are doing a commendable job in empowering seniors and enhancing their quality of life. I urge every senior citizen in Malaysia to join groups such as SA and be a part of their amazing community.
As Malaysia gets nearer to being categorised as an ageing society, the government should start playing an active role in encouraging the establishment of similar groups and even providing financial and other forms of support.
