Highlands in danger from overdevelopment

I AM writing to express my grave concerns regarding the alarming rate of development and forest clearing in Genting Highlands, Pahang. The exponential growth of such construction has resulted in the disappearance of vast stretches of forested areas on this once pristine peak in the Titiwangsa Mountains.

This rampant deforestation not only disrupts the delicate balance of the local climate but also poses a grave threat to the area’s unique ecosystem and the diverse wildlife that call this region home.

Such deforestation not only exacerbates climate change by reducing the trees available to process CO2 but also contributes to soil erosion and increased vulnerability to landslides.

I believe that Genting Highlands, known for its greenery and cool temperatures, has lost its unique charm. The increasing number of resorts and hotels has compromised its natural beauty and negatively impacted the appeal of this tourist destination.

To preserve the remaining green spaces, it is imperative that immediate action be taken. The authorities must enforce stringent regulations and conduct thorough environmental impact assessments before approving any further development.

These assessments should consider the long-term consequences for the environment, wildlife and the overall well-being of Genting Highlands.

Furthermore, it is crucial for developers, stakeholders and the community to prioritise sustainable development practices that protect and conserve the remaining forested areas. Encouraging responsible construction practices, such as implementing green building standards and promoting the use of renewable energy, can help minimise the ecological footprint of any developments.

Additionally, efforts should be made to raise awareness among the public regarding the importance of preserving Genting Highlands’ natural heritage.

Community engagement and education can foster a sense of responsibility and encourage citizens to support sustainable development and conservation.

We must act swiftly to prevent further degradation of Genting Highlands’ environment. The authorities, developers and the public must collaborate to strike a balance between development and the preservation of nature.

Genting Highlands can still reclaim its status as an exclusive retreat for those seeking tranquillity amidst greenery and cool temperatures, but only if we take immediate action to protect the remaining forests and wildlife.
