THE decision to do away with the mandatory death penalty is undoubtedly a progressive step in our criminal justice system. There is also talk of eliminating the death sentence completely. However, I am of the opinion that this should be done.
There are ample examples in Malaysia and all over the world of extreme criminals who have committed brutal murders that are shockingly merciless. Such brutal criminals are too dangerous for the system to handle, remaining dangerous in incarceration and, in most cases, have the ability to disguise their rehabilitation. This is why I feel that capital punishment must be maintained for brutal acts of murder and those who cause extreme mental anguish in their victims. This discretion must be made available to the courts with the necessary checks and balances.
