THE Russia-Ukraine war has disrupted not only the global energy market but also many other commodity markets, including the supply of nickel and palladium, which are critical metals in electronics.

One commodity that has generated much discussion is vegetable oils. Both Ukraine and Russia are major suppliers of sunflower oil. The EU, for example, is an avid consumer of sunflower oil. With the disruption in supply because of the war in Ukraine, the EU and other countries that import sunflower oil have no choice but to look for alternatives.
