THE world commemorates Down Syndrome Day every year on March 21. The 21st day of the third month was chosen because it symbolises the uniqueness of the 21st chromosome that is present in triplication (trisomy), a condition in which chromosome 21 has a third – an extra – chromosome. The presence of three chromosomes on chromosome 21 creates individuals with Down syndrome.
This special day is observed to increase awareness of Down syndrome and to honour people throughout the world who possess these unique characteristics.
