John Jeffery: Remembering a distinguished Malaysian medical scientist

THE Malaysian medical scientific fraternity lost one of its most respected and distinguished members when John Jeffery died peacefully on Aug 15, 2021, aged 78.

John was a parasitologist and taxonomist. His illustrious career in science began in 1962 when he joined the Hooper Foundation’s research unit that was based at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur, as a laboratory assistant. He subsequently continued in that capacity at the Arbovirus Research Unit of the University of California that was located at Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Medicine.
