Better to be safe than sorry

I REFER to Diyana Pfordten’s report “Need for ‘self-regulation’” (Sunday Star, April 25; online at bit.ly/star_regulate). It is important that the public heed the call of health experts to practice self-regulated movement restrictions and avoid going out unnecessarily. The call is timely as the number of Covid-19 infections in the past few days stands at over 2,000 cases, while the current national infectivity rate is at 1.13 (it needs to be below zero).

As Hari Raya will be celebrated soon, I hope that our authorities will give serious consideration to the advice of Malaysian Public Health Physicians’ Association president Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar that open houses should not be held in order to prevent a spike in community cases. It is therefore wise that Malaysians continue to remain vigilant and be safe rather than sorry in these trying times.
