It was recently reported that a particular politician had made a statement on 6 Jan, 2021, that one of the key gripes his party has with the current government is due to its decision to continue with court cases against a particular political party and its leaders. The Malaysian Bar views with concern such statements, as this does not augur well for the rule of law.
Malaysia is a country that values the separation of powers between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches, as this provides checks and balances against one another. Judicial independence is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and it treats everyone as equal before the eyes of the law. This is irrespective of one’s political status or authority.
