‘There are so many such cases’

TWO months ago, I was inundated with text messages supposedly from Telekom Malaysia (TM) advising me to settle my Unifi bill, failing which my name would be placed on the blacklist maintained by credit reporting agency CTOS (Credit Tip-Off Service).

At first, I ignored the messages because I do not and have never had a Unifi account, but they kept coming. Worried, I went to a TM office in Bayan Baru, Penang. To my surprise, the staff showed me documents stating I had registered for the service and used it but never paid the bill. They asked me if I’d ever lost my identity card, and I told them I hadn’t.
