Tackling underlying issues of poverty

THE government recently took the necessary step to revise the national poverty line income (PLI) from RM980 (monthly household income) to RM2,208. The latter is more realistic in light of our actual cost of living.

The new PLI subsequently raised the country’s poverty rate from 0.4% to 5.6%, resulting in an official poverty rate 14 times higher than previously estimated.
