Harsher penalties not really the answer

MY heart goes out to the family of Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail, who died after being hit by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver on May 3. He was manning a movement control order (MCO) roadblock at the Kajang-Seremban Expressway (Lekas) when the accident occurred.

There is anger among people from all walks of life at the way this dedicated policeman lost his life, and the knee-jerk reaction to enhance penalties on driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is to be expected.
