Merit only yardstick when picking leader

I REFER to “Why put a 30% lid on hiring women?” (The Star, Nov 15) where Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said there should be no restriction.

Why indeed? If there are capable women to helm a company or a nation, why not?

It was also reported that 27% of the board of directors were women in the top 100 companies on Bursa Malaysia.

In this globalised market, any position is open to all men and women of calibre. Let merit be the only yardstick in picking a leader.

The world demands that capable leaders run the show. A position is not reserved for men only; it should be reserved for persons who can truly and sincerely do the job.

The world would be poorer if second-rate persons are picked when first-rate personalities are available.

Why should we judge with a jaundiced eye and ignore capable women?

I call on men to stand up for gender equality. Play second fiddle when you cannot be the captain of the ship.

May the best win in any field of competition.
