Dear teachers, thanks for all the caning


I AM writing this to share my experiences on how one can excel without having to wait for government handouts. I am now a professor in a research university and will be retiring soon.

Fifty years ago, I was a primary school child who had at most 20 sen in my pocket when I left for school every day. I had to wait for the bus with my older brothers and push my way in to find a place to sit. More often than not I had to stand for the 30-minute or so drive to the school.
