Volunteer programme a new page for English learning

PAGE (Parents Action Group for Education Malaysia) is to be congratulated for its proposal to set up a nationwide English language coaching programme for school children to be undertaken by semi-volunteer teachers, “Coming together for the sake of better English” (Sunday Star, March 25).

Most Malaysians would agree that our English proficiency needs to be enhanced to be globally competitive. The Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025 emphasised that apart from proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia, we need to be English-proficient too as it is the international language of communication in the workplace and business.
