Ceiling price may backfire

I REFER to the report “Mavcom looking into costly festive airfare complaints” (The Star, March 20). At last, Mavcom has finally heard the woes of travellers from Sabah and Sarawak. While a decisive action is certainly welcomed, it is nevertheless disheartening to learn that when it comes to the pricing mechanism, price control seems to be the only option in the eyes of the authorities.

Although a price ceiling may help to prevent excessive pricing, it could lead to businesses scaling back their services, leaving consumers with fewer choices.
