Money does grow on trees

The jungle track at the mossy forest in Cameron Highlands which used to be covered by moss is now covered by soil and mud due to high number of tourists going through the track. SAIFUL BAHRI/The Star

GRANDMOTHERS are fond of saying that money doesn’t grow on trees. I beg to differ – not only does money grow on trees, it grows on rocks too.

I am referring to moss, the small flowerless plants that typically grow on rocks or tree trunks in dense green clumps or mats, often in damp or shady locations (pic). Moss is the all-purpose sponge of the forest, storing water, releasing nutrients and housing tiny critters.
