IN May last year, the world almost came to a standstill because of a global ransomware cyberattack launched by WannaCry which targeted computers running the Micro­soft Windows operating system.

As a result, the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain was forced to cancel thousands of appointments and hundreds of critical surgical procedures. Companies worldwide were also rendered dysfunctional without the support of their digital network while government institutions could not function as usual.
