Ban is just PR exercise

THIS refers to the letter “Don’t rubbish plastic ban” (The Star, Jan 14) by Wong Ee Lynn which rebutted the reasons given by the public for their opposition to the ban on free plastic shopping bags in Selangor.

I agree with the writer that plastic and polystyrene products pose a serious threat to the ecology. However, the general public cannot be blamed for speaking out as they have done because it is not the public that decided on the introduction of plastic in its many forms. It is the authorities that have allowed the rampant and uncontrolled use of plastic from shopping bags to artificial flowers.
