Restructure the rehiring programme

AS a restaurant owner, I would like to share my concerns arising from the report “Decision on new intake of foreign workers shortly” (The Star, April 30). The numbers have spoken: Since the rehiring programme began in February, only 55,000 out of the estimated 1.4 million illegal foreign workers here have been rehired.

Rather than bring in more foreign workers, it would be more beneficial if we could legally rehire the foreign workers who are already in our midst. There may be more than the estimated 1.4 million, which is a staggering number and perhaps sufficient to serve the demands of various sectors in this country.
