IN a few days, it will be one year since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Although the GST is widely unpopular, many economists consider it the most efficient way of widening Malaysia’s tax base.
There were teething problems at the implementation stage but the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (MDTCC) and the Royal Customs Department worked extremely hard to curb profiteering activities and to ensure that price increases were not excessive. The Malaysia Consumers Movement (MCM) commends their efforts.
