I REFER to Dr Yam Kah Kean’s assertion that one would need Mandarin to understand the classics in “Are dialects dying out?” (Sunday Star, Aug 2). I humbly beg to differ.

An amalgam of Cantonese and Hokkien (Middle Chinese) was used in the Tang period.
