Public transport alone not enough

I REFER to the letter “Kidex highway lacks merit” (The Star, April 11) and wish to correct a common misunderstanding that improvements to public transportation alone will resolve problems of traffic congestion on our roads and highways.

Government studies indicate that back in 2008, there were just 2.6 million private vehicles travelling on roads in the greater Klang Valley area, based on a multimodal transport split of 17% using public transport (bus, taxi, monorail, LRT) and 83% using private transport (cars, motorcycles etc).
