Polystyrene boxes safe for packing

WE refer to the letter “Ban usage of polystyrene boxes for food” (The Star, Feb 10) and would like to address the concerns raised by the writer on the health and safety aspects of polystyrene (“PS”) foam products, and its impact on the environment. Concerns over the use of PS should be analysed based on facts rather than on perception.

On the health and safety aspects of PS, the Japan Hygienic Olefin and Styrene Plastics Association confirmed that PS resins can be safely used as components of articles intended for use in contact with food.
