WHILE we support the effort by the Higher Education Ministry to produce 60,000 Malaysian PhD holders by 2020 through the MyBrain15 initiatives, one should also look into the ratio of PhD holders versus the research output.

As K.T. Maran put it in his letter “PhD not a title to gratify one’s ego,” (The Star, Nov 30), unless the numbers are translated into quality research output, a PhD is merely a title to gratify one’s ego.
