BEM only admits recognised engineers

I REFER to the letter “Allow British grads to register with BEM” (The Star, July 22) which gives the wrong impression that all engineering graduates from British universities are not qualified to register with Board of Engineers Malaysia. I checked with BEM’s website (www.bem.org.my) and found that the letter is misleading.

All engineering graduates of universities accredited by the UK Engineering Council (www.engc.org.uk) are recognised and allowed to be registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia as graduate engineers and after a stipulated period of practical experience under a qualified professional engineer, they are entitled to sit for the Professional Assessment Examination (PAE) which is a prerequisite to apply for registration as a professional engineer.
