Exempt Jane from NS stint

I was sad to read in The Star on Sept 23 that the Director-General of National Service cannot exempt 17-year-old Jane Lim from attending NS training despite the recent death of her brother after completing his NS stint.

Being the only surviving child in the family, she will not be in the right frame of mind to attend NS training. In such a situation, the least the NS department could do is to exempt her.
