It is refreshing and enlightening that Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has proposed the adoption of depressed and flooded villages through bigger integrated community efforts, “Adopt a village” (The Star, Jan 11). 

The same principles and methods were part of the bigger “hearts-and-minds” campaign during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960).
