LIKE many Chinese parents, I sent my daughter to a vernacular primary school during her first six years of education. Having studied in an English-medium school at primary and secondary level, I cannot read or write Chinese.
Having missed that opportunity, I did not want to deprive her of learning Chinese. It was more for economic prospects rather than cultural or ethnic reasons that prompted my wife and I to make that decision.
