Single mothers have to bear the dual responsibilities of earning an income and bringing up their children. For those who are poor, their tasks are even more challenging, writes IVY SOON in the fifth part of Sunday Star's series on poverty in Malaysia. 

KATHY Kuppusamy knew that something was amiss when her husband, who was working outstation, started sending less and less money home. Her husband had always had “a weakness for women”, she said, but she was still shell-shocked when he wrote to say that he was leaving and asked her to “take good care of the children”.
