US ushers in New Year with caution

AMID the tightest security since the 2000 Millennium celebrations, more than 750,000 revellers gathered in Times Square to watch the 1,070lb Waterford crystal ball drop to the sound of fireworks and confetti to welcome the New Year. 

The celebrations went on into the wee hours of the morning – the fear of terrorist attacks being the last thing on the minds of those who made the annual pilgrimage there to usher in the New Year.
