Prof Amin Abdullah is in turns Islamist scholar,Muslim intellectual and Indonesianphilosopher.He is currently Rector of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN)inJogjakarta,and author of various works on Islamic thought and comparative philosophy.On a recent visit to Malaysia,Dr Amin spoke to BUNN NAGARA about various issuesrelating to contemporary Islam.The following are excerpts in the second part ofa two-part exclusive interview

You have advocated a knowledge-based approach to the development of Islam. Where would this leave Islamic clerics whose survival as a group depends on their supposedly greater knowledge of the faith?
