NEW DELHI: Remember Nerd, the famous Hollywood blockbuster? The movie portrays faces and facets of ragging on US university campuses. It wouldn’t be wrong to call it the voice of nerds – the new entrants and their tale of resistance. Made about two decades ago, the movie focuses on the events of one campus, but many perceive it as a portrayal of campus life in the civilised USA in general. 

The ragging (that could have proved fatal) of a freshie in Jalpaiguri Engineering College recently was the manifestation of perverse instincts that lay hidden in the system of our so-called civilised sense and sensibility.
