TRINCOMALEE: For two decades, very few tourists dared venture east to the white sandy beaches and clear blue waters of Trinco (as Trincomalee is affectionately called) where a journey at night in nearby areas is an adventure as one is likely to run into herds of wild elephants every now and then.

Tourists kept away from the east and north of the country because it was mostly off-limits due to clashes between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan forces.
