MIDWAY into the war against “Mafia-type dons” and “influential dark forces,” Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has taken a slight detour. He has to handle a more pressing problem: widespread corruption in the country's police force.

For starters, he has decided to transfer out all officers of Bangkok's Huay Khwang police station that has been reportedly “bought” for about Bt360,000 (about RM36,000) in fixed monthly bribes and another Bt100,000 in other handouts to key officers.
