IN a tabloid advertisement, Singapore’s “favourite short message service (SMS) download station offers a list of the latest ring-tones, pictures and screensavers.” It jostles for attention among pages and pages of classifieds that cater almost exclusively to teens. 

One calls on “all new members to join the chat party for free, 24 hours a day” while another screams: “Free Chat Registration.” They carry names, words and phrases that few parents comprehend.
