WHETHER it was calling “Europe’s bluff” – as The Times describes the pledge to block a new UN resolution authorising war against Iraq – the fact remains that the trans-Atlantic split has deepened further. 

The joint statement by France, Germany and Russia on Wednesday on the need to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, which China has also endorsed, has strengthened the peace camp at the UN.
