Pushing for mandatory jail

THE Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, dissatisfied that punishment under the existing Copyright Act has no deterrent effect on CD piracy, is pushing for mandatory jail term for convicted pirates. 

Its minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohamad Yassin said in an interview with Nanyang Siang Pau that his ministry had proposed to the Attorney-General's Chambers that the law be amended to provide compulsory custodial sentence for offences relating to the production and distribution, wholesale or retail, of pirated CDs.
