Sharing The Nation

Over the decades, the previous administration did much to recognise equality between non-Muslim men and women. Now it’s time for this Pakatan Harapan government to summon the political will and courage to recognise the equality of and non-discrimination against Muslim women as a fundamental policy.
Before bad habits get encrusted and we hear the same old misogynistic pronouncements in the name of Islam, it is critical that this new government take the necessary steps to examine how the religion is understood and used as a source of law and public policy.
If the Pakatan Harapan government is truly committed to ‘Compassionate Islam’, it must lead in shaping a new discourse, build new champions within its own religious authorities and institutions, and build public support for the necessity and possibility for change.
EVERYDAY I wake up in this new Malaysia, thankful for the courage of Malaysians to bring about change. I am beginning to watch local TV news, discovering local hosts and learning more about the newly-elected MPs, and being most impressed by the fluency of DAP Ministers and MPs speaking in the national language.
