Moments define matches as Palace collapse, City rise, and race hots up

MOMENTS define a football game. One moment you’re scoring a third goal, and the next, you’re conceding from a free-kick.

By the time the full-time whistle blows, your team have let in five goals, and you’re left wondering about all the ‘what ifs’.

That’s exactly what happened to Crystal Palace and Oliver Glasner. From a winning position with a rout in sight, Palace ended up on the wrong end of it.

If only Jean-Philippe Mateta had kept his shot down at 2–0, and if only Eberechi Eze had timed his run better, the narrative could have been entirely different and Palace could have secured another famous win over Manchester City.

The early Saturday kick-off did not disappoint just like previous encounters between these two clubs.

This time, however, Pep Guardiola came out on top, silencing the jeers after City went 2–0 down early on. He reminded fans what his team are capable of, levelling the game before half time.

It was a timely reminder of Kevin De Bruyne’s enduring class. At 33, he may not deliver 9/10 performances every week, but on his day, he’s still unplayable.

Perhaps the most exciting takeaway from this match was the emergence of James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly. Guardiola may not need to dip into the transfer market this summer after all.

His “Pep’s Puppies” could be the start of a youth revolution, reminiscent of Fergie’s Fledglings. Their energy and intelligent runs brought a fresh dynamic to City’s game and hinted at a promising future.

A 1–1 home draw against Brentford brought Arsenal back down to earth after their midweek high of nearly eliminating Real Madrid.

It seemed Mikel Arteta had one eye on the second leg. Rather than piling pressure on Liverpool by closing the gap, Arsenal left the door wide open and Liverpool gladly walked through with a win over West Ham, albeit nervously.

Arne Slot’s men should count themselves lucky that it’s Arsenal chasing them this season and not a relentless City side. If it were, the gap would be down to two points already.

Despite going ahead early, Liverpool failed to kill the game and gradually allowed West Ham back into it. Some teams sprint toward the finish line and this Liverpool team are crawling. Once again, it was Alisson Becker who ensured the Reds stayed on course for title number 20. The victory also came with another boost: Mohamed Salah finally signed a contract extension, sending a wave of relief through the Kop.

On Super Sunday, Newcastle carried their League Cup momentum into the league and thrashed Manchester United 4–1. The result pushed the Magpies up to fourth and within reach of Nottingham Forest.

Given current form, even overtaking Arsenal isn’t out of the question. With just three points separating third and seventh, and an extra Champions League spot on the line, we’re in for a thrilling finish.

As for Manchester United, their goalkeeping woes continue and even with Andre Onana absent.

Altay Bayındır deputised, but made a costly error that led to a goal. Although Bayındır played decently, the opposition overwhelmed United’s midfield.

Their counter-attacking spells looked decent, but the squad simply wasn’t enough to compete with the top teams right now.

A big summer awaits, and perhaps their friendly against the Asean All Stars could spark the reset they need.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa extended their winning streak to four games despite missing two penalties against Southampton.

Villa are now putting pressure on Chelsea, Newcastle, and City. None of these clubs can afford to slip – not with Villa charging hard.

While the title race may lack drama thanks to Arsenal’s repeated stumbles, the battle for Champions League spots is absolutely electric.

All eyes will be on the fight for third, fourth, and fifth. There’s zero margin for error now. Six games to go. Every single point matters.

Six games to decide whether glory and riches await or heartbreak sets in come summer.
