QUITO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador has allocated more than 200 million U.S. dollars to address the effects of the El Nino climate phenomenon, as record rainfall is already affecting the country, President Daniel Noboa said Friday.
In an interview with Quito-based Radio FM Mundo, Noboa said the effects of El Nino began to be felt in Ecuador in September, with the "most critical moment" expected between December 2026 and February 2027.
He said record rainfall was recorded in the coastal region in September, while accumulated rainfall in November has reached 400 percent of the monthly average.
"In the Costa, in less than 72 hours, it rained four times what it usually rains in the whole month of November," Noboa said.
The government has requested emergency credit lines from the World Bank to secure additional funding should the need arise, he added.
Ecuador has been facing repeated emergencies caused by heavy rains since Aug. 29, when a national red alert was declared amid the evolving El Nino phenomenon.
