MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Luis Pedro Marco de la Pena, president of Spain's railway infrastructure manager Adif, submitted his resignation on Wednesday following a meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister Carlos Cuerpo, local media reported.
According to Spanish radio station COPE, Marco de la Pena presented his resignation after meeting with Cuerpo, who has temporarily assumed responsibility for the Transport Ministry following ex-Minister Oscar Puente's resignation on Tuesday.
Other Spanish media outlets, including El Debate, reported that Cuerpo had dismissed the Adif president. The circumstances surrounding his departure have not yet been officially clarified.
Marco de la Pena was appointed Adif president in September 2024 under Puente. The state-owned company is responsible for managing, maintaining, and developing much of Spain's railway infrastructure.
His departure comes amid growing scrutiny of Spain's railway safety following two deadly train accidents this year.
In January, a train collision near Adamuz in the southern province of Cordoba killed 46 people. On Oct. 28, another high-speed train collision near Urda in the central province of Toledo claimed 69 lives.
